The other night J and I stayed up late to have a talk about WW and how it has affected our lives. It's easy to focus only on my own struggles with the program, but the truth is that it affects him too, and definitely not in a trivial way. Our patterns have been disrupted significantly -- we used to eat out 5, 6, 7 times a week, easy. Now we tend to eat in more often, and when we do go out, I often try to avoid particular cuisines that I know aren't points-friendly. When I cook, I try to make something low-fat and relatively low in points... and so far we've only found maybe two or three meals that he genuinely enjoys that are good for me too.
I also didn't realize how much my behaviour at restaurants affected him. I thought that since he could order whatever he wanted that it didn't matter, but he hates seeing me order things that I wouldn't normally order, just to stay within my points. He hates not being able to share appetizers, and to see me consult my points booklet multiple times while examining a menu.
It's a hard problem. I have to look out for myself, or else I'm going to balloon up to where I was before (and neither of us wants that). But his feelings are completely justified too. I wish my journey didn't affect his life to the extent that it does. He didn't ask for this!
We're still working out solutions to these various issues. I'm hoping that when we move in together we'll spend more time cooking and will be able to find more recipes that appease both of us. I'm going to try having him go through my cookbooks and pick things that appeal to him, so he's not forced to eat things that are both uber-healthy AND suit my tastes more than his.
He also wished that sometimes we could go out and have things "normal" again, without me dwelling on points and rules and ordering things that are okay, but not really satisfying to me.
I was hesistant at first, and I'm not really sure how it's going to work out, but we're going to at least try it tonight. I have 10 points left for dinner, plus 24.5 flex left, so we're going out to a restaurant in the Beach and I'm going to try not to think about the program (well, too much anyway). It will be a nice little vacation for both of us, and I'm pretty sure I can afford it points-wise. The question is whether I can actually stop thinking about the program, or if I'll simply be internalizing my counting. But I think it's worth trying and discussing after, because honestly I'm not quite sure what he needs in this regard.
If things feel better tonight, I proposed that we schedule a date night each week from now on. I'll save up my flex and we'll go out and have a 'normal' night out. If it works, it will be a nice little weekly tradition, and give us some real quality time beyond just seeing each other around the house. (I know that date nights will become much more important when we move in together, so this is sort of killing two birds with one stone.)
I'll let you know how things go. In the meantime, I'd really love to hear if you have any stories about how WW has affected your partner, or about any compromises you've made to make things easier for him or her. :/
